I’m off to the ADAA Awards in NYC today. Beth and I will be there from the 13th till the 18th. I’ll probably have internet access for some of it, so feel free to keep in touch.

The festivities are held at the

Skirball Center for the Performing Arts

566 LaGuardia Place

on the New York University campus

(at the corner of West 3^rd Street and La Guardia Place)

Here’s a map to help you find the location.

The gallery showing opens at 6:00 pm and the awards ceremony begins at 7:30 pm.

We’ll conclude the evening with a champagne toast for the talented winners and finalists.

Dress is “creative formal.”

I think the ceremony may be invitation only, but the gallery event should be open to the public.

Cara Phillips

Cara Phillips, who runs a great blog called Ground Glass and also helps spearhead the amazing Women in Photography project through Humble Arts, recently sent me an email about her newly updated website. I’ve always liked her work, much of it dealing with issues of self esteem, cultural aesthetics, and ways of seeing beauty. She deals with some issues I get very heated up about, but I’ll let her work do the talking.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom For Sale

Anyone want to buy a copy? It was just sent to me, brand new and sealed, never installed or registered. I won it, but I’ve already got access to it at school, and I could use money for film and expenses. 200 or best offer. Send me an email at ian@ianaleksanderadams.com if you’re interested.

Oh, while I’m at it, I’ve also got a few comics in case anyone wants them. Hellblazer: Joyride, Dangerous Habits, Reasons to Be Cheerful, and Red Sepulchre and the first book of Lucifer (I’ll throw in the Lucifer Nirvana one shot if you’d like). Ten bucks each. All only read once, like new.

We’re pretty busy over here finishing up Beth’s portfolio and getting the basics of her website ready. It should be online by next week. It’s unfortunate that a lot of her paintings are in storage or hanging in other states, so we can’t get good copy work of them. We do have plenty of things that have never seen the light of the internet before. I can’t help it, I’m more than a little excited to see it all come together.

Outside Z’s House

My back is getting a little better, but I’m still not at the top of my game. I’ve got a little news for people hoping to see my Israel show up at the Bean, though. It’s been extended a little bit since the next person needs a little more time. So you can see it till the 4th, at least, and maybe till the 8th of August.

I just got a message on facebook from one of the guards that was with us on the trip, Dror. It seems he’s touring the east coast. He might visit, so I’m hoping he gets to see the show while it’s up.

Missed a day back there. Sorry about that. Yesterday I woke up and felt like I’d been doing heavy lifting all night - my lower back was in serious pain. It’s a bit better today, but yesterday I had to sit in bed for most of the day. Beth helped me ice it and gave me a little home remedy. I’m trying to be a little bit more productive today, but I have to take it easy. I got up from bed to go brush my teeth and I couldn’t see for a second because it hurt so much. Really surprised me. Ah well.

Crises Brings Opportunity

I wanted to take a quick break and plug an important renewed initiative for clean energy in the USA. Cheaper transportation, cleaner air and water, and general sustainability - these are some of the things I think everyone should be able to get behind.

This afternoon I received a mailing from MoveOn and decided it was something worth passing on. Ever since the 2000 elections, I get a lot of mailings from many political groups, from ACLU and the EFF, to Factcheck and other anti-spin sources, to Greenpeace and Planned Parenthood. I admit that since I get one almost every day, most I just quickly skim. It’s not asking for money and as far as their emails go it’s relatively apolitical. In the past, MoveOn supported petitions have helped stop or pass laws, so it isn’t just going to sit on the internet (like your favorite petition asking for a Star Control sequel - see how I snuck that in there?) Here’s the complete letter:

Dear MoveOn member,

Al Gore took a big risk when he called on us to get 100% of our electricity from cheap, clean sources within 10 years.

It’s an achievable goal, but it’s already under attack from the oil and coal companies. They’re calling his plan unrealistic, impossible, and crazy.¹

We’re in a crisis. If this is the fate of any new idea to get us out of this crisis alive, we’re toast. Gore’s challenge will live or die on the reaction of people like us.

We can turn back Big Oil’s attack if hundreds of thousands of us personally endorse Gore’s challenge to power our country with 100% cheap, clean energy within 10 years—and then we urge Obama, McCain, and Congress to get on board.

The petition says: “America must commit to producing 100% of our electricity from cheap, clean renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, within 10 years.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says “it is absolutely possible” that Congress will accept Gore’s challenge. ² But to make it happen, we’ll need to show Congress just how many people want bold action.

Al Gore laid out a far-reaching yet simple plan to deal with the most pressing issues of the day. Switching to clean energy will help us survive the climate crisis. And save our souring economy. And help end the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and possibly Iran. And offer relief from high gas prices. In Gore’s words:

“We’re borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that’s got to change.

“But if we grab hold of that common thread and pull it hard, all of these complex problems begin to unravel and we will find that we’re holding the answer to all of them right in our hand.”³

That answer is a massive program to switch America to clean energy. Crisis brings opportunity.

Solar, wind, and other clean energy sources are ready to replace oil and coal. And these abundant energy sources promise lower costs at a time when getting to work is getting too expensive for too many.

Exposure Therapy Public Release

After four months, this project is finally “done.” I’m sure there will be some minor tweaks to the documentation and some troubleshooting of the web files, but for the most part, the project is complete.

After you’ve clicked through the maze-like website a bit, you can read the entire documentation here, including online class discussion and comments by people who found the information while the performance was ongoing.

Chilly Chats in Forsyth

Hanging out in Forsyth with Whitney, Roshini and her brother Vijay who was visiting this past winter.

Thanks for all the kind words about those last pictures. Beth and I had equal hand in creating them, and for many I honestly couldn’t say if they were hand held by one of us or set on a tripod. She’s really not a muse, she’s an artist. It just wouldn’t be fair to not mention that one more time. These were pictures of us enjoying daily life with each other (and there are a fair amount more created all the time) but there were enough good ones from that day to make a post about it. I’m playing with the idea of actually putting them on the website, comic panels included.

You can find it and Being Inside in Blurb’s Photography Book Now Store created from the competition entries. Andrew Hetherington, over at Whats The Jackanory, posted a nice little rundown of the offerings available there.

One day I’d love to judge competitions. It’s got to be seriously amazing to be sorrounded by that amount of imagry and actually get paid to just sit and sift through all of it. Dream Job.

The Biblical Zoo and Turn Installation Photos
